What the Panhandle does to a floor
The numbers below are the National Weather Service Amarillo office's own climate description, not this site's characterization.

One thing the climate does not do: dry out the slab. Slab moisture comes from the soil, and the City of Amarillo's foundation manual describes many local slabs sitting on expansive clays. Dry air on top and vapor from below is the two-sided stress that makes Amarillo unusual for wood — the slab foundation guide covers the bottom half.

Acclimation: the step Amarillo makes non-negotiable
Every floor is manufactured and stored at some moisture content, and it will move toward the house's conditions after installation whether or not it was given the chance before. Acclimation is giving it that chance first. In Amarillo the gap between a warehouse and a living room in February can be large.
- Run the house at normal living conditions — heat or cooling on, humidity where it will be year-round — before the material arrives. Acclimating to an empty house with the HVAC off acclimates the floor to conditions it will never see again.
- Bring the material into the rooms it will be installed in, boxes opened or cross-stacked as the manufacturer directs, for the time the manufacturer specifies — commonly several days for hardwood, about 48 hours for laminate and LVP.
- For hardwood, have the installer measure moisture content of the boards and of the subfloor or slab, and install only when they are within the manufacturer's allowed difference of each other.
- Leave the expansion gap the product calls for at every wall and fixed object. Amarillo's swings are the reason it exists.
Humidification: the step after installation
Commonly cited guidance for wood floors is to hold indoor relative humidity in a moderate band year-round — figures around 30–50% are widely quoted — and the National Weather Service's description of sub-15% spring air explains why an Amarillo house can't do that without help in the dry months. A whole-house humidifier on the furnace, or portable units in the rooms with wood, limits the winter gapping that a homeowner in Houston never sees. The manufacturer's own humidity range is the one that governs a warranty; ask for it in writing when you buy. Laminate, LVP, tile, and carpet don't need any of this — which is a fair part of why they dominate Amarillo's slab homes.
Getting it quoted
Ask each bidder what acclimation they specify, whether they measure moisture content, and what indoor humidity range the product's warranty assumes. Texas has no state flooring license and the City of Amarillo issues no contractor ID numbers — check general liability insurance and Better Business Bureau standing instead, and involve the City of Amarillo — Building Safety Division (806-378-3041) only if the slab or subfloor needs work. Texas does not require a state contractor license for flooring installation, refinishing, or repair — it is not a TDLR-regulated trade (TX-002). That puts more of the vetting burden on you: ask any company for proof of general liability insurance, check their standing with the Better Business Bureau, and — for work that touches the subfloor or slab — confirm whether the job needs a City of Amarillo permit before work starts. The City of Amarillo does not issue contractor ID numbers, so a company citing a "city license number" for flooring work is a vetting red flag, not a credential (AMA-001).
